Prince George Women’s March enjoys a more diverse crowd in 2018

About 100 people led the charge in Downtown Prince George during the annual Women’s March this past weekend.

The event was in support of all the Women’s Marches that took place around the world demanding change and equalization.

March Organizer and Manager of Inspiring Women Among Us Zoe Meletis says they’re quite pleased with the numbers in larger centres.

“People were out in literally hundreds of thousands and some of them were the biggest public demonstrations or rallies ever in large cities, so it’s still pretty exciting people are taking to the streets to be active members of their societies.”

Meletis says adds as much as people love Prince George, all is not perfect and the group will continue to stand in solidarity with people who are oppressed and marginalized within various systems of government around the world.

A more diverse crowd was also present in the northern capital for the march compared to just a year earlier.

“We had a lot of men march with us, a lot more than last year and we also made it clear we wanted children there with us because it is their future and they should have recognized voices.”

“I think it’s critical that’s it’s not just for women only, this isn’t an exclusionary event, this drawing attention to gender imbalances and the threat to repeal women’s rights but everybody is welcome,” added Meletis.

She adds in places like the United States, some of the progress that has been made needs to reach the government level in order for their message to stick.

“I think the message is to take this kind of energy and action to the vote, it’s great to come together and it’s great too that we want to see these progressive changes but we want to make sure they show up at election time.”

The march took place near Canada Games Plaza.
