Youth in solitary confinement an embarrassment: BC Ombudsperson

BC’S Ombudsperson says young people in custody are in danger because of inaction by the provincial government.

Jay Chalke says the Ministry of Children and Family Development has only implemented three of the 26 recommendations he made three years ago to protect youth who are isolated while in custody.

Isolation is usually used for those who are suicidal or have deliberately injured themselves.

Chalke says these young people are, in his words, “placed very far from the sight of justice,” and deserve better protection and treatment.
