The Influenza Vaccine is now available across the province.
Northern Health is reminding residents about the importance of getting a flu shot.
“Each year in Canada, hundreds of people die from influenza or complications from influenza such as pneumonia” said Chief Medical Officer Dr. Sandra Allison. “Influenza in people aged 65 years and older or in other high risk groups can lead to more serious health concerns.”
Northern Health treats over 150 cases of flu each year, but those are just a small percentage of the people who contract the virus.
“Those numbers really do just reflect the tip of the iceberg, because those are only positive tests” said Allison. “There are a number of people who are sick throughout the year who don’t seek medical help or testing.”
She says getting vaccinated isn’t just about protecting yourself but also the people around you who may be more vulnerable to the virus.
