UNBC completes study on Fraser River Basin

A recent UNBC study has found the impact of the declining mountain snow pack when it comes to the stream-flow timing of the Fraser River Basin.

Professor of Environmental Science, Dr. Stephen Dery explains the findings.

“What we have seen is an advance in the spring pulse of melt water in Fraser River when looking at data from Hope by 10 days which is a significant advance.”

A dramatic change from snowfall to rainfall has also occurred which has led to a 20 percent decline of snow melt to the river discharge.

The study period goes from 1949 to 2006.

Flows on the lower Fraser River can be predicted by tracking the data upstream at the Fraser River at Shelley and the Thompson River near Spences Bridge.
