Fire north of Fort Fraser now 50% contained

Crews are making progress on the Sutherland Road fire 10 kilometres north of Fort Fraser, according to the Prince George Fire Centre.

The estimated 1,800 hectare fire is still considered out-of-control.

Fire Information Officer Amanda Reynolds says a crew of 27 firefighters and a helicopter continue to battle the blaze.

“They did a really good job yesterday with all the water skimmers and the air tankers and the containment is now at 50 per cent. They hope to change it to being held status at the end of the operational day,” says Reynolds. “We are expecting to get some precipitation into tonight and tomorrow – so it will help – but it’s not rainfall that’s just going to put these fires out.”

Three evacuation alerts are still in effect in rural areas in the Regional District of Bulkley-Nechako.

The Big Bend fire near the southern border of the regional district is still an estimated 1,900 hectares and is 0 per cent contained.

The Grizzly Lake fire burning near the east was reported at 250 hectares yesterday with a 70-80 per cent containment. That evacuation alert is estimated to affect about 65 residents.
