BC introduces Bill for First Nations land acquisition

The provincial government has introduced legislation that would allow recognized First Nations to purchase and hold land.

Currently, the only way First Nations can own land is through a treaty.

Otherwise, they have to create corporations or set up other arrangements to make a purchase.

Indigenous Relations Minister Murray Rankin says the proposal would remove what he calls a “long-standing and discriminatory barrier, ” and allow First Nations to directly acquire new land.
