Vanderhoof teen finishes top 10 at international beekeeping competition

A Vanderhoof teen is coming home with experience and strong placing in an international beekeeping competition.

Malvina Pavon was one of three Canadian teens representing our country at the International Meeting of Young Beekeepers.

“It’s a combination of competition and also a cultural way for young beekeepers to expand their knowledge of beekeeping, but also getting to meet the cultures and also get to learn different types of beekeeping methods from other young beekeepers from around the world,” she explained.

During the competition, the teams were evaluated on several skills, including manual work with bees, recognition of beekeeper’s tools, and recognition of different sorts of honey.

Canada placed fourth out of 29 countries.

The Czech Republic was first, Slovakia was second, and Austria was third.

“We were all just so happy and amazed that all of the work, the hard work that we put in, our coordinators helping us out, teaching us, training us as well, it really paid in effort,” Pavon said.

“We could have done a bit better but in the end it was amazing, we were all happy with the result we came home with.”

Individually, Pavon was 8th out of 80 kids.

“My parents were so amazed with that, being the first time, it was amazing and wonderful,” she said.

“I was so proud of the hard work we put into it.”
