Youth between Vanderhoof and Prince George will have the opportunity to learn about the Nechako Watershed.
The Nechako Watershed Roundtable is preparing to host their annual youth canoe trip this upcoming August.
“We’re taking two voyager canoes down a section of the Nechako River,” said Fraser Basin Program Coordinator Jordan Cranmer.
“This is an awesome opportunity for youth to come out, paddle on the Nechako watershed, get to know the river and the watershed as a whole, connect with like-minded youth with similar interests, learn from Elders and local First Nations about Indigenous cultural knowledge, and really start to build their network and speak with community members and experts to learn about career research and educational opportunities.”
Cranmer added there will be cottonwood tree planting, as well as looking at some of the ongoing research projects on the Nechako River.
She said it’s the third year of the program, and it’s been ramped up since it started.
The program now offers two days of the canoe trips
“We’ve had a real amazing increase in community partnerships over the last couple of years,” she explained.
“We’ve also had a ton of uptake from community members, researchers, and people with careers in the Nechako watershed who want to come and support youth getting their education within the watershed.”
As of Friday, Cranmer said about half of the 32 spots were filled.
Registration is open to those between the ages of 13 and 25, and will be open until August 1st.
