Ottawa to ban imports, production of plastic

The federal government is taking the next step in its program to make Canada plastics-free by 2030.

As of December 20th, the manufacture or importation of many single-use plastic goods will be banned.

That includes plastic bags at store checkouts, cutlery, stir sticks, and single-use straws attached to beverage containers.

Businesses with those items will be allowed to continue using them until they run out of stock.

The ban was supposed to be put in place in 2021 but the federal government said a scientific assessment of the plastics was delayed due to the COVID-19 pandemic.
