Ex-women’s soccer coach sentenced to 16 months in prison

The CEO of the Vancouver Whitecaps is praising the four young women who came forward with allegations of sexual assault against coach Bob Birarda.

Birarda was sentenced to 16 months in prison yesterday (Wednesday), after pleading guilty to sexual assault and sexual touching charges.

That’ll be followed by eight months of house arrest and three years of probation.

Axel Schuster says the young women were brave to come forward with their claims, which spanned 20 years, from 1988. He’s apologizing for the hurt that was caused and hopes the sentencing is a step in the healing process for the victims.

Birarda was let go in 2008 when the allegations first arose but a criminal investigation wasn’t launched until 2019.
