Canadian food banks saw 1.5 million visitors in March

The annual report from Food Banks Canada says a record number of people are turning to their members for help.

The report, released this morning (Thursday), says there were almost 1.5-million visits to food banks in March of this year.
.
That’s 15 percent more than March of 2021, and a 35 percent increase over the same month in 2019, before the pandemic struck.

The group says skyrocketing costs for food and housing, high inflation, and low social assistance rates, were the major contributors to the rise in food bank usage.

People on fixed incomes, like seniors and low-income earners, have been hardest hit.

About one-third of food bank clients are children.
