Site C construction hits 100 days

The Site C dam is officially 100 hundred days into construction, and while a considerable amount of work has been done, it’s paling in comparison to the mountain ahead.

900 metres of public road improvements have been completed, with another 1.6 km of roadwork underway, and 15 km of construction access yet to be finished within the dam site.

Over 530 hectares of land has been cleared, with roughly 13,000 cubic metres of timber delivered to local mills for processing.

If those numbers aren’t staggering enoguh, more than 1-million cubic metres of material has been excavated and relocated on the north bank of the dam site.

And as Community Conway noted, simply building the worker camp is quite the undertaking.

“We have a temporary 300-person work camp that’s been set up on site for the workers who will be building the longer-term 1600 person lodge. So we’ve just done the first concrete pour for the worker accommodations.”

While the work on the ground is still in the relatively early stages, BC Hydro has been trying to procure proper turbines and generators for two years now.

“They’re specifically designed for any facility that’s being built. You can’t just buy them shelf-ready,” says Conway, “It’s ongoing, but we will be doing procurements related to the actual powerhouse and spillway structures. So they will be coming.”

Site work is estimated to be at a high during years five and six.

Conway added site prep is a massive first step in an almost decade-long construction period for the dam.
