Carrier Sekani Family Services 26th AGA kicks off tomorrow

Starting Thursday, Carrier Sekani Family Services is holding it’s 26th Annual General Assembly.

Family Services leaders and staff will share program updates over the two-day event. This year will feature keynote speaker Madeleine Dion Stout, a nurse and residential school survivor. There will be presentations on health care and child welfare and the latest news from Family Services.

This year’s event has a theme, which Project’s Director Marlaena Mann says is “lateral kindness.”

“We do have some issues stemming from colonisation around lateral violence. It’s something that lots of people are familiar with so it’s really important to go back to cultural teachings around conduct of how we do treat each other with respect.”

Lake Babine Nation in Burns Lake is hosting the event at Margaret Patrick Memorial Hall. It’ll start starting at 8:30 AM and finish around 3 PM Friday. When it’s all said and done, Mann hopes everyone learned what’s been accomplished in the past year, and what the plans are for the future.

“Some of the ways that we’ve really worked with our communities to create wellness together, some of the goals and obstacles that we’ve overcome over the past year, and also ideas about how we can conduct ourselves moving ahead in a respectful way.”

If you can’t make it, much of the AGA will be livestreamed.
