BC NDP critic pans minimum wage hike by BC Liberals

You can add the BC NDP to the list of people who have panned the paltry $o.45 cent increase to the BC minimum wage.

Economic Development Critic, Shane Simpson says the new increase still won’t stretch very far.

“This increase if you’re lucky would be enough to buy you a cup of coffee every day. It’s not an increase that in any meaningful way is going to help people who are struggling with the cost of living in British Columbia.”

Simpson adds the new wage of $10.85 still puts low-income earners in a bad spot.

“We’re talking about people who would work full-time making less than $23,000 a year, they need to think can they live off that salary and possibly support a family. It’s just not possible.”

The change takes effect on Thursday.

The BC NDP and Federation of Labour are both of the opinions a $15 minimum wage will fix a lot of problems.

Alberta will have a minimum wage of $15 by 2018.

Simpson believes it will take a change in power next May in order to make progress on the issue.
