Yekooche First Nation awarded provincial funding to study solar, wind power projects

Four First Nations across Northern BC and the Cariboo are receiving $50,000 each to support clean energy projects.

The funding is through the province’s First Nations Clean Energy Business Fund.

The Yekooche First Nation, 75 kilometres northwest of Fort Saint James will put their portion of the money towards a feasibility study for potential solar and wind power projects.

“Yekooche First Nation is excited and grateful for this funding to investigate solar and wind power projects,” said Steve Nycholat, director of economic development, Yekooche First Nation.

“It will help us create a more sustainable and greener future for us and our neighbours.”

In addition, the Quesnel-based Nazko First Nation will develop a comprehensive Community Energy Plan that will be used as a roadmap for the community’s energy objectives.

The Takla First Nation, 400 kilometres northwest of Prince George is using its funding to develop a long-term electricity load forecast, which will allow the off-grid nation to develop clean-energy goals and peak-load management strategies.

Lastly, the Cheslatta Carrier Nation, located south of Burns Lake is set to support the development of a clean-energy park that includes a solar farm and biofuel mill.
