The Prince George Kodiaks’ losing streak extends to seven games as they fell 37-6 to the undefeated Okanagan Sun at Masich Place Stadium last night. (Saturday)
“We had a better effort than what we did down in Kelowna,” said Kodiaks Head Coach Jamie Boreham.
The Kodiaks fell 70-0 to the Sun in Kelowna a month ago.
“There’s a whole lot more positives to take from this, losing’s always going to suck, but the guys who went on the field, they improved, they showed fight and willingness, the execution of the game plan was a lot better,” Boreham said.
“We did have some breaks and stuff like that, but not as many mistakes and a whole lot better effort, which is easier to live with.”
Despite the score it was one of the better defensive outings for the black and yellow, holding one of, if not the best team in the country to just four offensive touchdowns.
“The guys committed to the game plan to minimize [Elelyon Noa], he’s probably the best player in the country,” Boreham said.
“The guys did a solid job except for a handful of plays. It’s easier to be optimistic about the effort and execution we showed tonight, even though we lost by a good spread again.”
Offensively it was a different story for the Kodiaks, who were without starting quarterback Sawyer Thiessen as he’s nursing an injury.
“It sucks when Sawyer’s been our go to, and he’s really carried the offence a lot and been a good leader, so not having him on the field hurt,” Boreham said.
“But I think he got some valuable reps from the sideline with leadership and seeing things, so I think that will translate into getting him back on the field in a couple weeks.”
In Thiessen’s absence, the Kodiaks rotated through their backups in Liam Diebert, Sam Sabine and Quinn Neukomm.
It was a disastrous first quarter for the quarterbacks, as they threw four interceptions in the first frame, including one pick six.
After the first quarter things started to fall into place, and the offensive started to move the ball down the field.
“They fought, at least they’re fighting for it and scratching, it’s nice to see Kellen [Lister] get on the field too,” Boreham said.
“Happy is a tough word, a weird word in this situation, but I think there was some good things from a lot of different areas that our guys can grow from.”
The Kodiak’s only scoring came off the foot of Brady Harper, who split the uprights from 38 and 12 yards out.
The Kodiaks have their second bye week this week, Boreham said the team will use that time to get healthy, as they prepare for their final two games, both of them against the 1-5 Kamloops Broncos.
