A conditional sentence order and a probation term have been handed down to a man following a scary incident in Downtown Prince George two years ago according to the BC Prosecution Service.
In Prince George court yesterday (Tuesday), Zakaria Benjamin Athaya of Surrey was issued a conditional sentence order of two years, followed by three years of probation.
The court also imposed a forfeiture order, a 10-year firearms prohibition, and a $100 victim fine surcharge to Athaya.
Just after 2 o’clock on August 22nd of 2022, the Prince George RCMP conducted a traffic stop with a suspicious vehicle.
The driver didn’t stop and fled the area.
When a second police vehicle tried to stop the suspect’s vehicle near 10th Avenue and Carney Street, the driver rammed the police cruiser and fled from officers a second time.
From there, officers flooded the area in search of the suspect’s vehicle, near Ross Crescent and 5th Avenue.
After colliding with a police car at the location, three suspects fled the area on foot.
Police followed the suspects and shots were fired by police during the encounter.
After a short foot pursuit, all three suspects were found by police and arrested without further incident.
In June of 2023, Athaya pled guilty to occupying a vehicle knowing a firearm was present.
Crown Counsel entered a stay of proceedings on the charges of possessing a restricted or prohibited firearm and wilfully resisting or obstructing a peace officer.
His co-accused, Dilmeet Sinth Chahal, is currently scheduled for June 21, 2024, at 9:30 a.m.
