UNBC has announced Brian Burke will be the keynote speaker during Legacy Night, set for November 21st at the Civic Centre.
“Every year the bar for UNBC’s Legacy Night is raised higher thanks to the incredible outpouring of support from our community, and this year will be no different,” said UNBC Director of Athletics and Recreation, Loralyn Murdoch.
“Brian Burke is one of hockey’s most inspiring and influential people, and we’re thrilled to welcome him to the University of Northern British Columbia and to have him participate with us for our 10th Legacy Night.”
Burke graduated from Harvard Law in 1981, starting his hockey career as a player agent.
He joined the Vancouver Canucks front office in 1987 as the Director of Hockey Operations, the first of many titles held in NHL front offices:
- Vancouver Canucks, Director of Hockey Operations, 1987-1992
- Hartford Whalers, General Manager, 1992-1993
- Vancouver Canucks, General Manager, 1999-2004
- Anaheim Ducks, General Manager, 2005-2009 (won Stanley Cup in 2007)

Burke and his family are also strong supporters of 2SLGBTQIA+ rights.
In 2012, Burke and his son Patrick launched the You Can Play project, the purpose of which is to eliminate homophobia in sport.
Since its inception, UNBC Legacy Night has helped raise more than $740,000, with 100 per cent of proceeds directly supporting scholarships and bursaries for UNBC student-athletes.
Tickets will be available on September 6th.
