100 new full time nurses being hired in Northern Health

The BC Nurses Unions has signed an agreement with the province that will see over 1600 new nurses hired in BC.

100 of those are coming to Northern Health.

“Anytime you can add positions it helps with frontline care and we are really pleased with the collaboration between the Ministry of Health and BC Nurses Union on this new approach to staffing.” Northern Health spokesperson Jonathan Dyck says

Under the agreement, the new positions will be created by March 31st 2016.

Dyck says the postings are already up for many positions across the region, adding that Northern Health faces a special set of challenges when it comes to fill some positions, particularly specialty nurses.

“We’re working on strategies to fill these vacancies including; advanced hiring of new grads to allow current staff to undergo training in specialty areas, incentive programs for return to service agreements in rural and remote communities and continuing to work with post secondary institutions.”

The agreement between the BC Nurses Union and Provincial Government ends a labour dispute that saw the two sides headed to arbitration.

In 2014 the BC Nurses Union broke off contract talks, accusing the province of violating it’s collective agreement and promise to hire over 2,000 nurses.
