An aging community centre east of Vanderhoof has caught the eye of the Four Rivers Co-op and is getting a much needed financial boost.

The Mapes-Blackwater-Sob Lake Community Hall has received a $5,000 donation from the organization, with plans to widen the hall itself and upgrade its bathrooms.

Community Hall Treasurer Denise Foley says the upgrades include a changing table for families, and adding features for better wheelchair accessibility.

She says the building has received minor improvements since the 1970s, not it hasn’t been enough.

“It does take up some time to get things happening, but we are really looking forward to what this donation is going to mean to the hall. It’ll really open up the doors quite a bit and allow more community members to use the hall.”

Foley believes the Community Hall has done its do-diligence having served local residents for decades, and is amazed how relationships have been established.

“We’re really striding to maintain that Community Association that goes with it. I used to live in the city, but I know more about my neighbor’s and live further away from them here than I ever did with my neighbors in the city, who were merely an arm’s length away at all times.”

The Mapes-Blackwater-Sob Lake Community Hall has a maximum capacity of nearly 150 people and hosts several events on the calendar every year.

This includes meals, dances, craft fairs, and various holiday celebrations.

Renovations are expected to be completed later this year.
