Strong winds expected to last through the weekend in northern BC

Northern BC isn’t out of the woods yet, as moderate to strong winds are forecast to continue through the weekend.

According to Environment Canada, the wind is due to another strong low-pressure system approaching the B.C. coast today (Saturday), bringing a prolonged period of southeasterly winds with gusts ranging from 60 to 80 km/h across the B.C. Interior, strengthening later this afternoon, peaking Sunday morning.

Winds will then ease slightly before an incoming cold front brings a strong push of southwesterly winds, with gusts potentially reaching 90 km/h early Sunday afternoon for western regions, and are expected to ease Sunday evening.

Areas under the special weather statement include:

  • Lakes District
  • Stuart Nechako
  • Prince George
  • Chilcotin
  • Cariboo
  • Fraser Canyon
  • 100 Mile House
  • Highway 97 – Clinton to 100 Mile House via Begbie Summit
  • South Thompson
  • Nicola
  • Coquihalla Highway
  • Okanagan Connector

Environment Canada said local utility outages are possible, and parks and forests will likely sustain some damage.

It also reminds people to secure any loose objects.

More information on the forecast can be found on Environment Canada’s website here.
