PG Mounties absolved by Independent Investigations Office of BC related to 2025 death

B.C.’s police watchdog has cleared the Prince George RCMP of any wrongdoing in relation to an August 2025 file where a man passed away.

According to the file, officers attended a noise complaint and once inside found a man locked inside a bedroom.

He was bleeding from self-inflicted wounds, experiencing what was later determined as a toxic drug overdose.

The Independent Investigations Office stated in its report officers saw him holding a broken table leg where a metal bracket was found attached.

The man was later found unresponsive after attempting to communicate with him for 40 minutes.

Officers began CPR, but he was later pronounced dead.

An autopsy determined the cause of death was mixed drug toxicity involving cocaine, quetiapine and diphenhydramine.

Lastly, Chief Civilian Director Jessica Berglund raised concerns that officers didn’t notify the IIO right away.

The agency was instead notified by a family member nearly a month later.
