Vanderhoof’s Sarah MacDonald is a Canadian Cattle Young Leaders finalist.
The program is for people aged 18-35 involved in various aspects of the beef supply chain who will be paired with a mentor for nine months.
MacDonald explains what areas of the industry she wants to focus on.
“I am looking to keep my mentorship pretty open. I am going to lean on the skill set of my mentor a bit but I am wanting to explore economics in the cattle industry, marketing options and succession planning. Those three thigs tie together quite easily.”
She often hears customer concerns over the high cost of beef, a situation that is hard to regulate.
“Knowing that there is a lot of middle players between the livestock producer and the consumer. As producers, we don’t always have control over that price and we certainly hear your concerns but it’s not something we have a lot of control in.”
MacDonald has great passion for the cattle industry and eager to learn from another industry professional.
“I don’t even think I have words to say how important the cattle industry is to me. I take a lot of pride in looking after our cattle and our land knowing that we are stewarding the landscape and looking after the land we are lucky to put our cattle on.”
MacDonald grew up on a farm in southern B.C. before moving up to Vanderhoof five years ago.
She will find out who her mentor is later this fall.
