70 Mile House evacuated as Pear Lake fire continues to grow

The Thompson Nicola Regional District (TNRD) evacuated 70 Mile House as of 10:00 this morning. (Monday)

According to the TNRD, this is due to the projected growth of the Pear Lake wildfire towards the area.

The TNRD said this is not expected to impact South Green Lake, which remains on evacuation alert.

According to the BC Wildfire Service, the Pear Lake and Fiftynine Creek wildfires combined over the weekend.

The latest update from the BC Wildfire Service, which came at 6:12 p.m. Sunday, the Pear Lake wildfire is now 63,368 hectares in size.

Smoke coming off the fire moved a bit north yesterday, prompting air quality advisories spanning all the way up to the Peace region.

“It’s a little smoky in 100 Mile right now, this is where most of the fire crews are now based, so we have a lot of fire crew activity running around here,” said Country 840 Morning Show Host Chris Adams. “100 Mile itself is not under any alert right now, but we’re a little on edge down here, because we’ve all been through this before.”

In 2017, wildfires forced evacuations in 100 Mile House and Williams Lake.

“A lot of folks who were here at the time, it really affected them, and of course this is bringing it all back,” Adams said. “If anybody has any issues with that sort of thing, don’t hesitate to reach out to the support folks and get a little help with it, because this is a tough thing to go through, and especially tough to go through it twice.”

Adams added on Saturday afternoon, the sky almost looked like it was nighttime at 2 p.m.

“Rain, thank goodness, was coming down, but, boy, it was all washing all the soot and ash and smoke out of the air,” he said.
