Wildfires in the Cariboo continue to grow

The BC Wildfire Service is battling 25 wildfires across the Cariboo Fire Centre.

There are two wildfires of note in the South Cariboo area. The Fiftynine Creek Wildfire has grown to 29,611 hectares in size, and the Pear Lake Fire is 19,064 hectares.

Both of these fires are located approximately 30 kilometres northwest and southwest of the village of Clinton.

Highway 97 through Clinton remains closed this afternoon, and motorists are advised to use caution due to visibility impairments from wildfire smoke.

The Felker Fire, around 30 kilometres south of Williams Lake, remains ‘Out of Control’, and has grown to 3,946 hectares in size as of the morning of July 25.

The BC Wildfire Service says access to the area through Enterprise Road is restricted as emergency services are evacuating residents and livestock.

Motorists are being told to expect delays in the area, and asked to avoid traveling unless necessary, so roadways are clearer for emergency services and evacuees.

In the North Cariboo, there are three large wildfires.

The Bourgeois Creek Wildfire is 1,644 hectares in size, and the Kluscoil Park Fire is 1,588 hectares.

The BC Wildfire Service says the Lesserd Lake Wildfire has combined with another in the area and now covers 5,143 hectares.

The Cariboo Regional District has issued evacuation orders for residents in these Fire Areas. The Thompson-Nicola Regional District issued an evacuation alert for Clinton as of July 24.

Residents are asked to leave immediately.
