Mounties say three people were rescued after a vessel capsized and sank on Stuart Lake yesterday (Tuesday).
Fort St. James RCMP responded to a marine rescue, after a 17.5 foot vessel sand near Sowchea Bay.
Police say an adult male was located in the water, while another adult male and a child made it safely to shore.
Nearby residents who heard cries for help launched their boat to assist before police arrived.
The adult male had been in the water for around an hour and a half, and was unable to to climb aboard the assisting vessel. Police say he remained afloat by clinging to debris from the sunken boat while awaiting rescue.
Officers aboard a police vessel located the man in the water and brought him safely onboard.
Officers made their way to shore, where they safely took the other adult and child aboard before taking all three individuals to be assessed by BC Emergency Health Services at Pitka Bay.
According to police, the male who spent time in the water was not wearing a personal floatation device, while the other adult and child were.
The Fort St, James RCMP is reminding everyone heading onto local waterways to:
- Wear a properly fitted PFD or lifejacket at all times while on the water;
- Ensure all required safety equipment is onboard and readily accessible;
- Check weather and water conditions before departing;
- Let someone know their boating plans and expected return time; and
- Regularly inspect their vessel to ensure it is safe and seaworthy.
Mounties would like to acknowledge the quick actions of residents who responded after hearing the calls for help. Mounties say their decision to assist played an important role in the rescue.
