Little Warrior, Big Heart: Prince George mourns passing of Mavrik Turnbull

A beloved three-year-old boy from Prince George has passed away following his two-year battle with cancer.

According to a Facebook post, Mavrik Turnbull died at Canuck Place in Vancouver on Monday surrounded by his parents Derek and Vanessa.

He was first diagnosed with Stage 4 high-risk neuroblastoma, an aggressive form of childhood cancer in October of 2024.

The boy was moved to Canuck Place Hospice Centre last month following a decline in his condition after receiving care in Boston.

Mavrik’s stay at the facility included visits from several notable NHL players including Connor Bedard, Macklin Celebrini, Fraser Minten, Zach Benson, and Vancouver Canucks legend Daniel Sedin.

In an earlier interview with MyPGNow.com, Mavrik’s father Derek was nothing short of amazed on the large swaths of people that rallied around his son.

“The community support has been absolutely incredible. Seeing all of these hockey players come together, people opening lemonade stands just supporting our family and talking about his story. I never would have imagined that his story would have gotten so big.”

Plans have begun for a celebration of life, scheduled for Prince George with a date yet-to-be-determined.

The family is continuing to accept funds through their Go Fund Me page to assist with funeral services, celebration of life, and a hotel stay while they wait for a vehicle repair.

Online tributes poured in for Mavrik including the Prince George Cougars and Vancouver Giants.
