British Columbia’s central community is about to become a centennial community.
This weekend (July 4 and 5), the District of Vanderhoof will be hosting a Centennial Celebration at Riverside Park, with a mix of live entertainment, food, activities, and more.
Vanderhoof Municipal Councillor Tom Bulmer said the atmosphere around the community has been electric.
“I think a lot of it will be the historic value of what we’re going to be presenting on the Saturday, and then of course there’s the buzz of the big huge rock bands coming in on Sunday,” Bulmer said. “It’s going to be a heck of a wrap up, and I mean with Headpins, Tom Cochrane, and Trooper all for free, I think we’re expecting a few people to show up.”
Bulmer said hitting the 100 year milestone speaks to the resiliency of the community.
“This town has survived, it’s always had a survival attitude, and it continues to do that,” he said. “We’ve survived mill closures in our area, and mine closures in our area, and timber shutdowns in our area and timber shutdowns in our area, we’ve experienced everything and we just keep on truckin’.”
With major projects coming online across northern and central British Columbia, Bulmer feels the future is bright for Vanderhoof.
“I think Vanderhoof, situated in the gorgeous Nechako Valley like it is, can be a great example of how to use eco-friendly ways of moving a community forward,” he said. “We’ve got our sturgeon hatchery here to show for the future of the river, and we’ve got the museum to show the past. Vanderhoof has a little bit of everything for everyone and because it’s such a hub and a regional outdoor activity area, I think we are looking at a very bright future in this town.”
Throughout the weekend, parking will be available at multiple locations throughout the community on a first-come, first-served basis.
Complimentary shuttle buses will be running throughout the day, providing transportation between designated parking lots and Riverside Park.
