Services from three organizations are being consolidated into a new team-based maternity clinic in Smithers.
Northern Health said the Northern Roots Primary Care, Borealis Family Practice, and Wedzinkwah Family Medicine Centre launched the new clinic on Monday.
It added some of the services being offered include pre- and post-natal care, lactation support, and home birth services.
“The Smithers area has generally enjoyed strong and stable perinatal (maternity) services, but more recently – and in many communities in the province – the sustainability of services and availability of providers are facing challenges,” the health authority said.
The new maternity clinic is located on the second floor of the Smithers courthouse building with about $31,500 going into renovations to prepare the space.
That funding came from Primary Care Network resources through the Ministry of Health according to Northern Health.
Equipment for the space cost about $20,400 and was funded by the Bulkley Valley Hospital Foundation.
“By centralizing care, providers working within a shared system benefit from more consistent communication, streamlined referrals, and easier access to additional perinatal services such as education and postpartum support,” said Northern Health.
