CN Centre new smoking policy lights online backlash

Since May 1st of this year, the cost of stepping outside the CN Centre for a smoke break is a closed door.

The arena hosted Bob Dylan Saturday night, which brought in nearly 3,800 people to enjoy his music, but not before some voicing their comments on a Facebook post reminding them of the City’s new smoking policy.

According to CN Centre Manager Glen Mikkelsen, once you go outside to take a puff, you can’t go back in.

“There’s a six-metre guideline we need to have from our doors out to a possible smoking area. In our situation with this building, people would be out standing in a road, and we just can’t make that work here with the type of facility we have.”

In September 2016, the province introduced a smoking, tobacco, and vapour products control act in which several cities have followed with their venues.

Mikkelsen is expecting some growing pains from the public as they adjust to this new rule.

“This is certainly something we’ve been talking about for many years. The policy is being used, for example, at venues in Victoria, Vancouver, and Edmonton; they’ve all adopted it, so this is just something that everyone is moving towards.”

He explains smokers can still go into the parking lot if they wish to do so.

This policy is being applied to all CN Centre functions, such as hockey games, concerts, shows, and other events.
