Air quality changing rapidly day-by-day in Northern BC

A special air quality statement has been issued by Environment Canada for several areas of the North and Cariboo regions due to the current wildfire situation.

This includes Prince George and Vanderhoof, but according to Meteorologist Ralph Adams, the air pressure has decreased significantly.

“As we saw that system moving in the winds were changing, some areas had the air quality deteriorated, and in some places, the air quality improved. It only takes a small change in the weather or the fire activity to change those values very quickly.”

He says Prince George specifically is seeing an average of more than 100 kilopascals (kPa) each day.

Adams adds the worst air quality right now still remains in Williams Lake.

“Their air quality deteriorated again, and this seems to happen almost every night because they are so close to the fires. Williams Lake is currently running at a 24-hour average of 245 kPa.”

During the night in PG, he says the air pressure drops to 29 kPa, with values changing at a rapid pace due to the weather’s ever-changing forecast.
