New Free Transit to service students, seniors

The District of Vanderhoof will be rolling out a free transit service starting Monday morning, bussing local residents in and around town.

As early as 7:30AM, transit will begin operation at Sai’kuz Veterans Park, circling back four times throughout the day and ending service at 4:30PM.

District Special Projects Coordinator Zoe Dhillon says this will benefit everyone from students to seniors.

“We’ve had a lot of requests from CNC students, for people from Sai’Kuz to get to school on time; there was no service for them to get school at that time. It’ll also benefit people coming in for doctor’s appointments or hospital visits.”

Between 10:25AM and 11:55AM, the bus will turn into ‘taxi mode’ when residents can call for a pick-up while the lead driver takes a lunch break.

Dhillon adds the idea for the bus came from the Highway of Tears Initiative, and BC Transit’s new Highway 16 bus from Smithers to Prince George.

“We applied for community transportation and we were successful. So, the BC government actually funding 70%; the Community of Sai’kuz and Vanderhoof are chipping in the rest, so it’s completely free for the riders.”

Dhillon says the schedule is subject to change if needed, but residents will be notified immediately through the district website.
