Canada 150 celebrations include fireworks, walk of fame

Vanderhoof will be rocking the red this Saturday!

To allow local residents to enjoy our nation’s 150th birthday celebrations, City Council has scheduled events for the morning, around the dinner hour, and in the late evening.

City Councillor Brian Frenkel is expecting nearly 1,000 people to attend and says the big attraction will be an announcement from the Nechako Valley Historical Society.

“It’s out first 150 historical families. A lot of the work was done to get these 150 names and basically, it was families that arrived here prior to the 1920s, the first World War, and the Saikuz was involved in selecting families as well.”

The day begins at the Historical Society as well with the Mary John Walk and a pancake breakfast.

After an afternoon break, a barbecue dinner is planned for 6PM at Riverside Park followed by fireworks when it gets dark.

Councillor Frenkel hopes everyone will leave feeling proud of their country, and of their community.

“We all have these stories of coming to communities like Vanderhoof and only coming for a year, but then, you’re here for 35-40 years. It celebrates who we are; Canadians are unbelievable people.”
