Vanderhoof RCMP, along with the District and School Board are cracking down on threats made to teachers at Evelyn Elementary School.
Threatening letters were originally sent out in November, with the most recent threat on February 28th, which led to an evacuation of the Canada Post office due to a suspicious substance that was was later confirmed to be non-toxic.
Mayor Kevin Moutray calls these actions a black eye to Vanderhoof.
“When you google a town, these are the stories that come up first, and the ones that make people decide ‘do I want to move there? Do I want to take a job there?’ and it just paints us in a poor light.”
“We’re a very welcoming and inclusive community, and a few individuals shouldn’t be able to mess that up.”
The Vanderhoof RCMP said in a release, the threatening statements made referred to BC’s Expect Respect & a Safe Education (ERASE) policy, but were specifically directed towards the diversity and inclusion guidelines.
Moutray says the next steps are in the RCMP’s hands, adding if anyone has any information whatsoever to bring it forward.
He notes it’s essential to get all the information to the police, and get the matter dealt with.
