PG Fire Centre monitoring blazes south of city and Fort Nelson zone

Wildfire crews continue to have their hands full with the current activity in the Prince George Fire Centre.

One of the blazes is north of the Blackwater River, southwest of PG where it is 705 hectares and is out of control, leading to a trio of Evacuation Alerts from the Cariboo Regional District.

Fire Information Officer, Adam Nicholas spoke with MyPGNow.com.

“The objectives are to eliminate any hot spots and prevent them from crossing any of the lakes to the south and we are expecting strong winds on that fire so we are strengthing flanks to the east and we hope to slow the progression to the east and south with air crafts.”

An Evacuation Order on the fire was issued by the Cariboo Regional District on August 9th. The BC Wildfire Service is looking to establish containment guards to the east, north and, west of the existing fire perimeter to contain the spread.

Nicholas added the near 55-hundred hectare Laidman Lake blaze 261 km south of PG is now being held after it was considered out of control.

“We have crews and helicopters on-site actioning that blaze making good progress on the northwest and southwest corners with the assistance of heavy equipment. Bucketing operations also took place on that fire yesterday (Monday).”

In addition, the Klenteh Creek blaze in the Fort Nelson zone is burning out of control but shouldn’t be a threat to the community.

“It’s currently 3,245 hectares but it is in the Fort Nelson fire cluster and is somewhat shielded from the highway by the burn scar of another holdover fire.”

Since April 1st, 419 wildfires have been reported in the PG Fire Centre, burning 775,435 hectares.

75% of all blazes in our area have been lightning-caused.

Province-wide, 130 wildfires have been put out in the past seven days.
