The Zone 7 U13 Girls 3×3 Basketball teams came 11th and 13th out of 14 teams during the 2024 BC Summer Games in Maple Ridge.
The teams were mostly made up of players from Burns Lake, along with a player from Vanderhoof and Hazelton.
Coach Rachelle van Zanten said the first game was a challenging start for the girls.
“They basically played the toughest team in the province. It was really a true test and really disheartening at first,” she said.
Most of the games played ended in losses but they were able to end up on a winning note.
“The teams in the Fraser Valley play club and play at very young age so their level of ball at U13 was very comparative to our senior level ball,” said van Zanten.
She added the experience was a great lesson not just for the girls, but also herself.
“As a coach, I really had to think about my words of encouragement and my plan of attack, which was play your guts out.”
The team returned home on Tuesday.
