Trio of Northern BC groups allocated funding to assist those escaping domestic, family violence

Three organizations from Northern BC are receiving funding from Rio Tinto to help prevent domestic and family violence in Canada.

Vanderhoof’s Omineca Safe House Society, Ksan House in Terrace and the Tamitik Status of Women in Kitimat are among those receiving a share of the $450,000 in donations the company is distributing to 17 different groups.

According to Stats Canada, 4 in 10 women have experienced some form of intimate partner violence in their lifetime.

In addition, people who belong to the LGBTQ+ community are more likely to be a victim of this than those who are heterosexual.

“Because of Rio Tinto’s ongoing support, Ksan Society will continue to provide services that support and empower victims of gender-based violence, working towards a safer, healthier, thriving community.” – Lisa Schmidt, Ksan Society Director of Counselling and Support Services.

“Omineca Safe Home Society would like to recognize and give thanks to Rio Tinto for their generous contribution to our organisation. This donation has allowed us to hire another full-time women’s counsellor, which is incredibly impactful for us, the women in our community and surrounding areas. This contribution has alleviated our significant waitlist, meaning that upwards of five hundred much-needed counselling appointments per year can be offered to support women living with or leaving violence.” – Winnona O’Meara – Omineca Safe Home Society Counsellor.
