Despite hearing reports of overcrowded classrooms in the lower-mainland, the amount of kids enrolled in BC’s public elementary and secondary schools has actually gone down.
Since the 2010-11 academic year which recorded over 579,000 students, that figure declined to 533,000 in 2014-15.
While the provincial downward trend is concerning, Julie Lavigne with Stats Canada says it’s not a fair comparison to see how each province stacks up.
“The number of students in Canada’s public elementary and secondary schools has remained consistent in recent years but any comparisons between the provinces and territories must be considered with caution because reporting varies by province and territory.”
Just over 5-million students in Canada were enrolled in the country’s public elementary and secondary school’s in 2014-15.
