WorkSafe BC reminds drivers of hazardous winter road and weather conditions

Worksafe BC is reminding drivers about the ever-changing winter weather and road conditions in the province.

Manager of Transportation and Road Safety, Mark Ordeman says the number of casualty crashes in BC spike dramatically over a 90-day period.

“If you look at a 5-year average from ICBC stats, on average 117 crashes take place in October and escalates all the way to 236 crashes in December so that’s more than double over those months.”

This trend also continues for those who commute to work as motor vehicle crashes are the leading cause of workplace death and injury.

The highest volume of those crashes occur between October and February.

A new online course called Shift Into Winter is now available for employers and supervisors.

Ordeman believes its proving to be a valuable resource.

“It really gives them a toolkit on how to manage any driving done for the workplace. It allows them to put in procedures to best manage driving by their workers to make sure they’re as safe as they can be.”

A joint provincial initiative called the Winter Driving Safety Alliance was formed back in 2009 made up of several stakeholders and organizations which includes the City of Prince George.
