Provincial gun amnesty coming in October

The provincial government has announced a firearms amnesty for the month of October.

Between Oct 1st-31st, residents are encouraged to arrange for pickup of unwanted firearms or weapons of any type. Guns can be documented or not, including restricted and prohibited firearms as long as they have not been used for a criminal purpose. Ammunition will also be accepted.

“We know that firearms, weapons and ammunition are often stolen during break-ins.” Minister of Public Safety Mike Morris said “For those wondering how to safely dispose of their unwanted firearms like that rifle they inherited that is now collecting dust in the basement, this month-long amnesty is the perfect opportunity to keep a potentially deadly weapon or firearm from landing in the wrong hands.”

Despite the amnesty, residents should not deliver weapons or ammunition to police stations themselves. Call the RCMP detachments non emergency line to arrange for an officer pickup.

The provinces last gun amnesty in 2013 took 1,801 firearms, 155 other weapons and about 30,700 rounds of ammunition off the streets.
