Homicide on Tl’azt’en Reserve, suspect in custody

One person is in custody following a homicide on the Tl’azt’en Reserve early Sunday morning.

On July 17th 2016, at 2:11am the Fort St James RCMP were called to a report of a stabbing on the Tl’azt’en (Tachie) Reserve, 65 km West of Fort St. James.

On the way to the call, officers intercepted family members of the victim who were transporting him to hospital. Police learned the suspect’s name and the family and victim carried on to meet with the ambulance, escorted by police.

Upon arrival to the hospital, the 31 year old Tachie man was pronounced deceased.

The suspect, a 33 year old Tachie resident was taken into police custody. Police believe the two individuals involved knew each other and the community is not at risk. The North District Major Crime Unit has taken control of the investigation.

Investigators are asking anyone with information to contact the Fort St James RCMP at 250-996-8269.

As required by the Police Act, the Independent Investigations Office (IIO BC) has been notified and they are assessing the matter as it relates to police officers’ actions and the medical assistance provided to the now deceased victim.
