Fish Hatchery Project in Vanderhoof netting positive results

Over 9000 white sturgeon fish will be released into the Nechako River during year two of the fish hatchery project in Vanderhoof.

Manager, Cory Williamson would like to reach a higher number in the future but is pleased with the current figures.

“A hatchery project of this nature is pretty challenging but our goal is about 12,000 a year which will be adjusted through time as we learn more survival but 9400 will certainly increase the population.”

Half of the sturgeon have already been released into the river while the other half will go out in the next two weeks which will include school aged children releasing 650 fish at Riverside Park.
