National parks issued special avalanche warning

With the warm sunny weather on the horizon this weekend, the risk of an avalanche at several national parks increases.

Avalanche Canada has issued a warning for Yoho, Kootenay and Jasper National Parks starting on Friday and will end on Monday.

Spokesperson, Karl Klassen has a few tips to stay safe.

“Avoid large open slopes, terrain traps such as gulleys or depressions in low ground where snow from even a small avalanche can pile up much deeper.”

Backcountry users without experience or training in avalanche safety and terrain recognition should avoid it this weekend.

The warning is usually around this time of year when the temperature continues to rise.

The main issue is a deeply buried weak layer which has recently produced natural or large human triggered avalanches.
