Provincial EI numbers drop in January

Just over 53,000 people in B.C. received benefits through the Employment Insurance program in January.

Stats Canada Recruitment Officer, Gordon Song says the province compared favourably to its counterparts. “Alberta was up by 2.0% so it went from 62,500 to 63,800. Relative to the rest of the province only Ontario and Quebec netted declines.”

Despite the 1.2% decrease, there was no shortage of people applying for benefits.

“The number of EI claims in British Columbia was up by about 700. In January, we saw more people applying for benefits and this number of claims can provide an indication who could become beneficiaries in the future.”

1930 people in Prince George were on EI at the start of the year which is a drop of about 30 from December.
