Over 800 Vanderhoof Elementary School students stood up to bullying for Pink Shirt Day.
The students performed a choreographed dance to the Shawn Mendes song “Believe” on Burrard Avenue.
Principal of Mcleod Elementary Libby Hart says a lot of preparation went into the event. “Maggie Fraser choreographed it, she’s been working with all our schools. She’s worked a lot here and made some videos that have gone out to schools so they can practice as well. So there have been elementary classrooms practising this for about a month now.”
She says that the strong turnout by the whole community was inspiring. “The community has been absolutely amazing. It really feels like we are now a town united in pink for this day which is pretty amazing.”
Vanderhoof Mayor Gerry Thiessen took part in the event.
“Hopefully this is something that people will remember all through the year and look back at this day and say, not only when I see bullying will I not be involved in it, not only will not walk away from it, but I’ll make a stand.”
Thiessen says the strong turnout from the whole community shows the character of the District of Vanderhoof.
A video of the dance will be uploaded to the ‘Valley Country’ facebook page later this afternoon.
