It’s not the Little League World Series, but the Vanderhoof Youth Slo-Pitch Association (VYSPA) is hoping to give local kids a similar experience.

This weekend, the society is hosting its first annual tournament since it formed in 2014.

Organizer Janina Vanden Bos says the goal is to grow the sport she loves within her community.

“There was little amounts of kids playing ball and I grew up playing ball, so I don’t want it to disappear. There’s four different age groups in the tournament, they’ll play against each other, and that will end our season.”

The VYSPA’s season finale bracket will feature 13 teams ranging from four-year-old sluggers to 16-year-old veterans.

Vanden Bos says she’s still looking to find more help before the last game on Saturday.

“We are looking for help at the concession and at the year-end barbecue, which is right after the tournament. If we can find a club to sponsor, that would be great too because I’d rather keep local clubs going from one society to another.”

First pitch is slated for tonight, 6PM at the Recreation Avenue Fields.
