WorkSafe BC warning workers and employers of the dangers of working in the cold

Over the past five years 72 workers in BC have been injured due to cold related exposure.

That includes one fatality and Director of Field Prevention Services, Dan Strand Explains what parts of your body are most vulnerable. “The extremities like your hands and feet plus all sorts of different aspects where injuries can occur with workers who are on the job outside.”

Strand says several steps can be taken by workers to help prevent those issues.

“You need to a raise a concern about hydration as well as being rested but the bottom line is its to ensure you’re minimizing exposure to skin in cold temperatures and wind chill by layering clothing so that perspiration can escape and keeping clothing dry.”

Cold related injuries include frostbite, hypothermia and trench foot.

Workers can be affected by frostbite by working with wet gloves or removing them by putting chains on tires.
